Stud hi lo poker has changed in the past few decades. In the 70s and even the early 80s, most stud hi lo poker games were played without a qualifier. This made stud hi lo poker a very slow game, but good for the tight players.
In the 90s, stud hi lo poker took a change and a qualifier was added. What this did, was eliminate just about any stud hi lo book, as most dealt with the old version of playing hi lo.
Adding a qualifier, added more gamble, action and enjoyment into the game. It made stud 8 starting hands that couldn't be played previously, into monsters in many situations. Example (KKK).
With this change stud hi lo poker actually took a great change for the better and previous books with stud hi lo lessons were virtually useless. Nothing lasts forever.
With the advent of this new form of stud hi lo poker, the game became an action game at most levels. Stud 8 starting hands for high changed 180 degrees. The old books with stud hi lolessons were now obsolete. In fact, to this day, I doubt anyone has produced a quality stud hi lo book. While stud 8 starting hands for low haven't changed much, the starting hands for high have.
The game is totally different now from it's predecessor, the old stud hi lo no qualifier. The game with no action. The old game always had a high hand and a low hand. The new game of stud hi lo poker is different. Many hands have no low, thus a high hand wins the whole pot.
A new book currently in print and due out before the end of the month is called poker unchecked, written by Russ Georgiev. Many consider Russ Georgiev the master of stud hi lo poker, modern day or olden day.
